For example:
Federal definition of %26quot;Poverty%26quot; for a family of 4 is $20,000 GROSS per year (in most cases that would mean the family of 4 is actually living off only $15,000 per year after deductions for taxes %26amp; insurance)
I don%26#039;t know about where you live: however, if a family of 4 lives in B%26#039;ham, AL %26amp; is making $1,000 per month, then they are making %26quot;too much money%26quot; to recieve any assitance (for example food stamps)
AL has an unemployment rate of 4% yet has a poverty rate of 16.2%
To me that is difficult to understand how citizens of the US or AL will tolerate this... people are working %26amp; are still living in poverty
Do you have any idea what percentage of the population in your state are living in poverty?
What kind of things do you participate in to help raise people out of poverty?
How do you feel about %26quot;working-class poverty%26quot;?
What percentage of people in your state are living in poverty even though they are working?
I live in Athens, GA and the poverty rate is very high, why because you have the University of GA, and they dont pay crap and 80 percent of the jobs goes to the students and you have people that are more qualify than some of the students and the students still get the job, sometimes you have to go all out of your way in order to get a job. I have an associate degree in Accounting and before I moved to GA I used to work for a Human Ressource company up north and I was making $35000 a year here in GA I cant get that, I have to settle for $23, 500. That sucks.
What percentage of people in your state are living in poverty even though they are working? loan
I think that even having a %26quot;working-class poverty%26quot; gives people the wrong idea about the fundamentals of capitalism.
I know many people who have no education and would rather collect social security or welfare than have a job and be just as poor. (I mean seriously - why work when you can make just as much money sitting around doing crossowrd puzzles all day?)|||Too many. Nobody should have to live in poverty and work full time.|||Whether or not a person or family lives in poverty often has as much to do with their lifestyle as much as how much money they make. We Americans often are so wrapped up in being entertained that we don%26#039;t prepare ourselves to earn a good living. If your gameboy/IPOD/TV/hanging out with friends/hiphop, etc. was the major function of your life, chances are you didn%26#039;t do well enough in school to get a scholarship to attend a good college. If your parents had the same attitude when they were young, chances are they can%26#039;t afford to send you to college, either. So, you wind up with a job in the service sector, but at the same time, you think you have to have a flat screen TV, SUV, and $150 shoes. Then, perhaps you need %26quot;assistance%26quot; for secondary things like food, rent, etc. So, you score pretty low on the SAT, but you%26#039;re cool. You can%26#039;t compete in the job sector with the students from China or India, but you know the words to Snoop Dog%26#039;s latest album.
Here%26#039;s how to help raise people out of poverty. If you%26#039;re a teacher, start teaching, set high standards, don%26#039;t allow cell phones and IPODs in school, and quit social engineering. If your students graduate without being able to read, write and speak english, do math without a calculator, and having a knowledge of how the world works, you%26#039;ve failed. Start doing your job or find another one. If you%26#039;re a parent, start paying attention to what your kids are up to, insist that they learn in school, and if they%26#039;re not learning, find out why. Make them do homework and throw their baggies/saggies/AirJordans in the Goodwill Box. IPODs only on the weekends, after their studies are finished. In other words, be a parent, not just a buddy who goes along with everything your kid tells you. It%26#039;s not being a meanie to supervise, it%26#039;s your job.
If you%26#039;re a student, find out from a successful person (who works someplace besides Burger King or WALMART) how they became successful and what steps you have to take to be that way too. Don%26#039;t ask someone who lives in poverty how to get ahead. It%26#039;s called finding a mentor and taking their advice. Get a roadmap for success and follow it. Learn how to ride the bus instead of buying a car. Get a part time job while you%26#039;re in highschool and save your money for college, instead of buying every gadget you see. Get away from the electronic toys and start reading. The intelligent, successful people in life didn%26#039;t get that way by playing, they learned what they needed to do in order to be successful and then did something about it.
If you%26#039;ve decided in the last couple of minutes that this is just a bunch of conservative, old fashioned B.S, then you%26#039;ve already lost the battle and will probably always live at or just above the poverty level.|||14.2... and I think it%26#039;s ridiculous...
personally, I think it%26#039;s all about education... the areas with low levels of education ALMOST ALWAYS have equally high levels of poverty...
to me it%26#039;s frustrating that these same people keep voting for the same people that don%26#039;t care about education... and keep this cycle going...
